How to get started with TRICARE Mental Health Services
Step 1: Identify your TRICARE plan.
Common plans include TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, TRICARE Reserve Select, and TRICARE For Life. Active duty service members typically have different requirements than dependents or retirees.

You can identify your current TRICARE plan by logging into https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/ and selecting "View my health care coverage."
Step 2: Confirm whether a referral is required.

Active Duty Service Members: Generally must begin care at a military treatment facility and obtain a referral for civilian therapy.

Most Dependents, Veterans, and Retirees: May access outpatient mental health therapy without a referral, depending on plan type.​
