MILITARY & VETERAN COUNSELING

You’ve faced pressure, uncertainty, and sacrifice, but no one trained you for
this part.

Whether you’re transitioning out of the military, navigating life after deployment, adjusting to civilian life, or still actively serving, this phase of your life feels unfamiliar. You’ve handled missions, operations, and leadership. You’ve sacrificed time, energy, and often your own well-being for others. But now that things are shifting, maybe even slowing down, and the emotional toll is catching up. The familiar comfort of routine has been replaced with uncertainty, and it feels like nothing is stable anymore. The weight of making decisions, the anxiety of the unknown, and the feeling of being pulled in a million different directions can leave you feeling stuck and unsure. It’s exhausting, and it feels like no matter how much you try to adjust, the pressure is always there, lurking. You might be asking:

Why do I feel so off now that I’m home?

Am I doing the right thing after leaving the military?

Why is this transition hitting harder than expected?

Maybe it’s not just one thing, it’s the buildup: the loss of structure, the weight of the unknown, the strain on your relationships, or the inner battles you’ve kept buried for years.

Military life brings real challenges. Whether you’re still in or already out, we’re here for you.

At RFC Counseling in Colorado, we work specifically with military personnel, Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and their families to navigate the emotional and mental challenges that come with military life — and life after service. We understand the complexity of these transitions: Leaving a career that defined your identity Feeling disconnected after returning home Navigating VA systems Coping with military trauma or moral injury Redefining your role in your family or community Even if the transition is something you planned, it can still feel unsettling, overwhelming, and isolating. That doesn’t mean you’re broken, it means you’re human. And at RFC Counseling, you’ll be met with understanding, not judgment.

Key Issues & How We Help

  • How do I get started?
Click the contact button located on the upper right corner of the page to submit your contact information, or directly contact us at 408-658-6291 or email us at info@rfccw.com. We will reach out to you within 24 hours!
  • How does counseling work?
We are currently offering virtual appointments only until further notice. We utilize secure video conferencing to enable face-to-face conversations. The video call is secure and confidential. When you schedule an appointment, you will be sent an email with a secure link enabling you to connect by video at the time of your appointment.
  • How often will we meet?
Generally, counseling sessions are held on a weekly basis as we begin to collaborate on goals, build rapport and gain momentum. As we progress, we may readjust our scheduled meetings to biweekly, once a month, etc. Some goals may take a few weeks to complete, while others may take several weeks, or months to resolve.
  • How long will I be in counseling?
Counseling is a personal investment, and for many, it is the most important investment one can make. Since counseling is an ongoing process, commitment length depends largely on the severity of issues and the goals we create together. We are devoted to clients’ therapeutic process and will diligently assess and monitor client progress throughout our journey together.
  • What happens if I miss an appointment?
A 24-hour notice is required to cancel and/or reschedule an appointment. If you do not show for your scheduled appointment and you have not notified us at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the session.
  • Do you accept insurance?
We are an out-of-network provider, which means we do not take insurance. We can provide a superbill at the end of each month that you can submit for reimbursement. We highly encourage you to speak directly to your insurance provider to inquire about reimbursement options.
  • What is the overall cost for counseling?
Under law, health care providers (including professional counselors) are required to provide a Good Faith Estimate, explaining the anticipated overall costs for health care services. You may ask your health care provider for a Good Faith Estimate prior to scheduling a service. For more information, please visit cms.org.
  • Is counseling confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality of all client information is protected by law. However, there are some limits to confidentiality when the safety of the client/others is compromised. We can provide you with the details of these exceptions during the initial counseling session.
  • How do I seek reimbursement from my health insurance company?
Generally, to seek reimbursement, log into your insurance portal and look for “submit a claim” or “out-of-network reimbursement.” You’ll typically upload a claim form and the superbill we provide. If you're unsure where to start, try calling the number on your card and ask how to submit an out-of-network claim for therapy.
  • How do I know if I (or my child) need counseling?
If feelings or behaviors are interfering with daily life or relationships counseling can help. You don’t have to wait for a crisis to get support. Wondering if it’s time is often the first step toward healing.
  • What happens during the first counseling session?
During your first session, we’ll review office policies, confidentiality, and informed consent. We’ll talk about what brought you to counseling, your goals, and gather information to better understand your needs. We’ll explain what to expect from therapy, answer your questions, and begin building a trusting connection focused on your strengths and challenges.
  • Does RFC Counseling provide in-person therapy or online therapy?
We currently offer virtual therapy sessions for flexibility and convenience. We use secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms to ensure confidentiality. An in-person location is in development to provide more options, but virtual therapy remains our trusted and effective service.
